On a Sunday afternoon, I visited the Calauan Relocation Site for informal settlers. I found myself mingling with the children. They pointed out to me this eight year old girl as dirty as garbage dump; she was cuddling her two year old brother who had no bit of clothes on, with sores, slight fever, bloated tummy, and crying due to hunger. Here is the punch: “kumakain siya ng mga bato,” the other kids reported. She opened her mouth, and indeed, there was a pebble inside. My heart sunk. I went home disturbed. Here is the larger scenario: 75% of the kids in the relocation school exhibit unmistakable signs of slight to advanced malnourishment. These kids are “guilty” of only one thing: they were born poor. They have not done anybody any wrong; but I bet soon they will.
